Did you ever play dodgeball at school? Well, the good news is that it’s picking up popularity again and it’s a fantastic cardio workout. Estimates vary, but you can burn anything from 150 – 200 calories during a fast, 30-minute session with adults.
Now, if you are like me, finding time to visit a dodgeball court twice or thrice a week is on par with hiking up Ben Nevis. In theory, it’s possible, in practice, it’s a logistical nightmare.
The good news is that you don’t need to. It’s a game that can be played in the garden, or even indoors (with rolled up paper)! The rules are simple:
- If you get hit by a ball, you are out
- If you hit another player with the ball or catch their throw, they are out
- You win when everyone from the opposing team is “out” or you have the most players left after 2 minutes.
An official game has six players, but you can do it with as little as 4 or as much as 10. If you have walking children you can include them in the game (toddlers love this), or just invite a few mums around. The length of the game makes it ideal for young babies as they can watch whilst seated on the ground or in the stroller. I have played this game at the beach, the park and during parties, in time to the music. A decent bra helps, but most of the time, I was not even in sports clothes!
Give it a try. Almost any lightweight ball will work and it’s a great way to sharpen up your throwing skills and burn some energy off your kids.
